Kiln Firing Slow
Symptoms
"The kiln takes significantly longer than usual to reach the target temperature, or stalls out before finishing."
Potential Causes
- Worn out elements (increased resistance)
- Low voltage from the power source
- Failed relay or switch
- Poorly fitting lid or door seal
Recommended Action
Test element resistance with a multimeter. If Ohms have increased by more than 10%, it's time to replace the elements.
Uneven Heating
Symptoms
"One section of the kiln is significantly hotter or cooler than the others."
Potential Causes
- One element has failed or broken
- A single relay has failed in a multi-zone kiln
- Elements are incorrectly installed (wrong wattage in wrong zone)
Recommended Action
Perform a 'paper test' or visual inspection while the kiln is on (briefly) to see if all elements are glowing evenly.
Element Bunching or Sagging
Symptoms
"Coils are pulling out of the grooves or bunching together in certain areas."
Potential Causes
- Elements were not stretched evenly during installation
- Insufficient element pins used
- Kiln is not level, causing elements to shift during expansion
Recommended Action
Heat the elements to a dull red glow and carefully push them back into place with metal pliers. Add more element pins.
Arcing at Terminals
Symptoms
"Visible sparks, buzzing sounds, or melted wires in the kiln's control box."
Potential Causes
- Loose terminal connections
- Corroded connectors
- Element tails are too short or under tension
Recommended Action
Clean all connections and ensure they are tightened to the manufacturer's torque specifications. Replace damaged connectors.
The "Paper Test"
To safely check if all elements are working, place small strips of paper in each element groove. Turn the kiln on high for 2-3 minutes. The paper in working grooves will char or catch fire, while paper in dead zones will remain white. This is much safer than trying to feel for heat.
