Signs Your Heat Strip Has Failed

A heat pump that cools fine in summer but blows cool air on auxiliary heat in winter usually has a failed resistance element — not a failed compressor. Watch for:

  • Cold or lukewarm air when "Auxiliary" or "Emergency Heat" is showing on the thermostat
  • A breaker for the heat kit that trips repeatedly or won’t reset
  • Higher-than-normal electric bills as a partial heat strip works harder to compensate
  • A visible break, sag, or burn mark on a coil in the heat kit
  • No continuity across an element when checked with a multimeter

What is an auxiliary heat strip on a heat pump?

An auxiliary (or backup) heat strip is a set of electric resistance coils built into the air handler or fan coil unit. When outdoor temperatures fall and the heat pump can no longer pull enough heat from the air, the thermostat energizes these coils to supplement the system and hold your setpoint.

How do I know if my heat strip is bad or if it’s the heat pump?

If the system still cools normally in summer but blows cool air on "auxiliary" or "emergency" heat in winter, the resistance heat strip is the likely culprit. A break in the coil, a tripped heat-kit breaker, or no continuity across the element when measured with a multimeter all point to a failed element rather than the heat pump or compressor.

Can you wind a replacement coil if I only have the old element?

Yes. Send us the failed element along with the unit’s make, model, and data-plate ratings (voltage and kW or amperage). We reverse-engineer the wire gauge, coil diameter, stretched length, and termination so the replacement drops into the original frame and restores the rated heat output.

Do replacement heat strips need to match the original wattage exactly?

They should. Matching the original voltage and wattage keeps the amp draw within what the unit’s wiring, sequencers, and breaker were designed for. We wind to your OEM resistance within a ±2% tolerance so the system heats as designed and stays within its electrical limits.

How fast can you ship a replacement heat pump coil?
