How to Measure a Heating Element for Replacement

Ordering a custom replacement heating coil is straightforward — but only if you start with the right measurements. A coil wound to the wrong specification will fire unevenly, draw the wrong current, or simply not fit. Here are the four measurements that matter, and how to take them.

Why Accurate Measurements Matter

A heating element is engineered to deliver a specific wattage at a specific voltage — and getting that voltage right is what keeps the element from under-firing or burning out. That output depends on the wire alloy, its thickness, and its total length — see our technical specifications for the gauges and ranges we wind. Get one number wrong and the whole element behaves differently, so take your time and write everything down.

1. Wire Gauge (Thickness)

The gauge is the diameter of the resistance wire itself. Use calipers on a straight section of the wire — ideally one of the tails, where the wire is not coiled. Even a small difference in gauge changes the element's resistance significantly, so measure carefully and record the value.

2. Coil Outer Diameter

This is the width of the coil as wound — the outside diameter of the spiral, not the wire. Measure across the coil with calipers or a ruler. If the coil has been stretched or distorted in service, measure a section that still holds its original shape.

3. Stretched Length

This is the most commonly mis-measured dimension. Heating elements are installed stretched, not compressed. Measure the full length of the element as it sits in its grooves, from tail to tail. If the element is already out of the equipment, give us the groove length it needs to fill instead.

4. Tail Length and Termination

The tails are the straight, uncoiled ends that connect to the power terminals. Note their length and how they terminate — straight, looped, or otherwise. The tails must reach your connection points comfortably.

What If You Cannot Measure It?

If the old element is too damaged to measure, the make and model of your equipment is often enough.
