When it comes to pottery kiln heating elements, the choice of wire alloy is the single most important factor in determining both performance and longevity. Most potters are familiar with Kanthal A1, but many are now considering the upgrade to Kanthal APM.
What is Kanthal A1?
Kanthal A1 is an iron-chromium-aluminum (FeCrAl) alloy. It is the industry standard for electric kilns because it can operate at temperatures up to 1400°C (2550°F). See our technical specifications for the exact gauges and resistance ranges we wind.

What is Kanthal APM?
Kanthal APM is also a FeCrAl alloy, but it is manufactured using Advanced Powder Metallurgy. This process creates a wire with a much more stable grain structure.
Why Upgrade to APM?
- Superior Form Stability: Standard wire tends to sag or "creep" over time as it goes through heat cycles. APM maintains its shape much longer, preventing coils from bunching.
- Extended Life: In high-fire environments (Cone 6 and above), APM can last up to 2-3 times longer than standard A1.
- Better Surface Protection: The oxide layer on APM is more adherent, meaning it doesn't flake off as easily during rapid cooling.
Which One Should You Choose?
If you primarily fire to Cone 06 or Cone 04, Kanthal A1 is perfectly sufficient. However, if you are a production studio firing to Cone 6 or Cone 10 multiple times a week, the initial investment in APM elements will pay for itself through reduced downtime and fewer replacements.
