Furnace Heating Coil Replacement: Element Types and How to Choose

Industrial furnaces run hotter, longer, and harder than any pottery kiln — so when a furnace heating coil burns out, the right replacement isn't always obvious. The element inside your furnace sets how hot it can go, how long it lasts, and whether a cheaper part will fail in months. This guide covers the main furnace element types, how to choose, and how to tell when a coil is done.

"Coil," "element," "heating coil" — what's actually inside a furnace

A furnace heating coil is the resistance element that turns electricity into heat. Depending on the furnace it may be coiled or waved wire, a flat ribbon, or a rigid rod. They all work the same way — current passes through a high-resistance material that glows and radiates heat — but the material sets the ceiling.

The four furnace element materials, by temperature

1. FeCrAl (Kanthal A1 / APM) — up to ~1400–1425°C. Iron-chromium-aluminium wire and ribbon, the workhorse for most electric furnaces: high resistivity (less wire needed), light, and cost-effective. APM is the powder-metallurgical grade with much better form stability and a 1425°C ceiling for long-life or higher-temperature duty.

2. NiCr / Nichrome 80/20 — up to ~1200°C. Nickel-chromium wire. It tops out lower than FeCrAl but stays ductile and handles vibration and frequent cycling well — common in lower-temperature ovens and appliances.

3. Silicon carbide (SiC) — up to ~1625°C. Rigid rods (Globar-style), used where wire elements can't survive: furnaces for technical ceramics, glass, and high-temperature heat treating.

4. Molybdenum disilicide (MoSi₂, "Kanthal Super") — up to ~1850°C. The highest standard option, for lab and production furnaces sintering technical ceramics. Brittle and pricier, but unmatched at extreme temperature.

How to choose the right furnace coil

  • Match the temperature first. Pick the most economical material that comfortably clears your peak process temperature with margin. Running FeCrAl near its ceiling shortens life quickly.
  • Mind the atmosphere. Oxidizing, reducing, carburizing, and vacuum atmospheres each favor different materials and protective oxides — always tell your winder the furnace atmosphere.
  • Match the resistance, not just the length. A replacement is wound to a target resistance for your voltage and wattage — never "the same length of a different wire."   • Balance cost vs. life. A FeCrAl element that lasts a year versus an APM one that lasts three changes the math for a production furnace.

Signs your furnace heating coil needs replacing

  • The furnace takes longer to reach setpoint, or stalls short of temperature — element resistance creeps up as the wire ages.
  • Visible damage: sagging coils, hot spots, thinning, blistering, or a broken/open element (infinite ohms on a multimeter).
  • Uneven heating across the chamber, or a controller fault from an open circuit.
