5 Signs Your Kiln Elements Are Failing

Kiln elements rarely fail in a single dramatic moment. They degrade gradually as the resistance wire oxidizes and loses cross-section with every firing. The good news: that slow decline gives you plenty of warning. Here are five signs it is time to plan a replacement.

1. Firings Take Longer Than They Used To

As elements age, their resistance rises and their heat output drops. If a firing that once took eight hours now takes ten or eleven, your elements are losing power. Keep a simple log of firing times — a steady upward creep is the clearest early warning you will get.

2. The Kiln Will Not Reach Temperature

A worn element may heat the kiln adequately at lower ranges but stall before reaching your target cone. If your kiln consistently under-fires, or the controller times out before completing a program, the elements can no longer deliver the wattage the firing needs — though it is worth confirming your supply voltage and amperage are correct first, since an under-powered circuit mimics worn elements. 3. Visible Sagging or Coils Out of Their Grooves

Inspect the elements cold. Healthy coils sit evenly in their grooves. Elements near the end of their life sag, bunch up, or pop out of the brick channels. Coils that touch each other or the shelves can short and fail suddenly.

4. Bright or Dark Spots Along the Element

During a firing, a healthy element glows evenly. A section that glows noticeably brighter is thinning and working harder than the rest — it will be the first to break. Dark or heavily scaled patches seen cold point to contamination or local damage.

5. Elements Have Become Brittle

A fresh element keeps some flexibility. An old one turns brittle and crumbles if disturbed. If your elements snap at the slightest touch during cleaning or loading, they are well past their service life.
