Why Your Kiln Won’t Reach Temperature (and How to Fix It)

A kiln that fires slowly or stalls a cone or two short of target is telling you it can't make heat as fast as it's losing it. The cause is usually one of five things — work them in this order, from most to least likely.
1. Worn elements (the usual culprit)
As Kanthal (FeCrAl) element wire ages it oxidizes and thins, and its resistance creeps up — so it draws less current and makes less heat. The classic pattern is firings that get gradually longer, then one day stall short. 2. A failing relay or contactor
Each element or zone is switched on and off by a relay (or contactor). When one burns or sticks, that section stops getting full power and the kiln heats slowly or unevenly. A relay that buzzes, chatters, or goes silent during firing is the tell.
3. Thermocouple drift
The thermocouple tells the controller how hot the kiln is. As it ages it often reads high — so the controller thinks you're hotter than you are and backs off early, stalling short of cone. If your witness cones disagree with the controller, suspect the thermocouple.
4. Low or wrong supply voltage
240V elements installed in a 208V kiln fire far too slowly, and a long, undersized circuit drops voltage under load. Verify the kiln's data plate and, if you can, measure the voltage at the outlet while firing. See understanding kiln voltage and amps.
5. Load, schedule, and venting
A tightly packed kiln, a too-fast program, or an over-aggressive vent pulling heat out can all stall an otherwise healthy kiln. Rule these out before condemning parts.
