Understanding Kiln Voltage and Amps: Why it Matters for Your Elements

One of the most common reasons for poor kiln performance isn't the elements themselves, but the electrical supply feeding them. When we design custom elements, we must know your exact voltage and amperage.
Voltage: 208V vs. 240V
This is the most critical distinction. Many industrial buildings use 208V power, while residential areas use 240V. Our pages for the popular Skutt KM-1027, Skutt KM-1227, and L&L e23T kilns each list separate 240V and 208V element options for exactly this reason.
- The Danger: If you put 240V elements in a 208V kiln, it will fire incredibly slowly and may never reach temperature.
- The Risk: If you put 208V elements in a 240V kiln, they will draw too much power, potentially blowing breakers or melting the elements instantly.
Amperage and Wire Gauge
The amperage your kiln draws determines the gauge of the wire we use for your elements. A higher amp draw requires thicker wire to handle the load without overheating. See our technical specifications for the wire gauges and resistance ranges we stock.
Voltage Drop
If your kiln is located far from your electrical panel, you may experience "voltage drop." This means the voltage at the kiln is lower than at the breaker. We can compensate for this by winding elements with slightly lower resistance to maintain the desired wattage.
Before ordering replacement elements, always verify the data plate on your kiln and, if possible, have an electrician measure the actual voltage at the outlet while the kiln is under load. If you're not sure what you need, send us your model details and we'll match the right element to your supply.
