Kiln Tripping the Breaker: Causes and How to Fix It

A kiln that trips its breaker is almost always one of a handful of faults. Work through them with the kiln unplugged or locked out — these are 240V circuits, and if you're not confident, call a kiln tech or electrician.
1. A grounded element (most common)
When an element sags and touches the metal case, or a broken end grounds out, current leaks to ground and trips the breaker — often the instant the kiln tries to heat. Test it: with the kiln off and the element isolated, measure resistance from the element to the bare case. It should be infinite; a low reading means the element is shorted to ground and needs replacing. The full procedure is in how to test a kiln element with a multimeter.
2. Moisture in the elements or brick
A kiln that's sat in a humid space, or one with freshly installed elements, can trip on its first heat as trapped moisture boils out. The fix is a slow "candle" fire — lid or door cracked, around 200°F for a few hours — to dry it out before a real firing.
3. A failed relay or SSR
A relay that's shorted closed can feed power continuously and overload the circuit. Listen for relays that don't click on and off during firing, or that run hot to the touch (when safely powered down).
4. Breaker and wiring problems
An undersized or worn breaker, a shared circuit, or loose and corroded connections can all trip under a kiln's heavy, sustained load. A breaker that trips well below the kiln's rated draw may simply be tired — an electrician can confirm and replace it.
5. GFCI nuisance trips
Kilns leak enough current that they generally belong on a dedicated standard breaker, not a GFCI. A GFCI that trips repeatedly is often reacting to normal kiln leakage rather than a real fault.
