How to Test a Kiln Element with a Multimeter

Safety first: unplug the kiln — or switch off and lock out its breaker — before you touch anything. Kiln circuits are 240V and can kill. If you're not comfortable working near them, stop here and call a kiln technician.
What you need
A digital multimeter that reads resistance (ohms, Ω) and continuity. That's it.
Step 1 — Find the target resistance
A healthy element's resistance is roughly R = V² ÷ W (supply voltage squared, divided by rated wattage). Our element resistance calculator does the math — for example, a 2,500 W element on 240 V should read about 23 Ω.
Step 2 — Isolate the element
Open the connection box and disconnect at least one lead of the element you're testing, so the meter reads only that element and not the rest of the wiring.
Step 3 — Measure resistance
Set the meter to the 200 Ω range and touch the probes to the element's two ends:
- Within ~5% of target: healthy.
- 5–11% high: aging — plan a replacement before it stalls a firing.
- Much higher, or "OL" / infinite: the element is broken (open circuit) — replace it.
Because FeCrAl wire's resistance barely changes with temperature, a cold reading compares directly to the target.
Step 4 — Check for a ground fault
With the element still isolated, measure between one element end and the kiln's bare metal case. It should read infinite (open). A low or zero reading means the element is shorted to ground — which is exactly what trips your breaker.
